💧 What is an Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD)?

An Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD) is a highly efficient evaporation and drying equipment used to concentrate and recover valuable solids from liquid effluents.
It works on the principle of creating a thin film of the feed liquid on a heated surface under controlled vacuum, while a high-speed rotor continuously agitates the film to enhance heat transfer and drying efficiency.

The system converts liquid or slurry feed into a dry solid or powder form, making it ideal for Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) applications.

Working Principle of ATFD

  • Feed Introduction:
    The concentrated effluent (from MEE or evaporator) is fed into the ATFD system.

  • Thin Film Formation:
    The feed liquid forms a thin film on the inner wall of the heated cylinder due to the high-speed rotation of the agitator blades.

  • Evaporation:
    The heat from the jacketed surface evaporates the water or solvent present in the feed under vacuum conditions. The generated vapors are condensed and collected separately.

  • Continuous Drying:
    The continuous agitation prevents fouling and scaling while ensuring uniform drying. The solid residue moves downwards by gravity and scraper movement.

  • Discharge of Dry Product:
    The dried material (powder, flakes, or crystals) is discharged at the bottom outlet, ready for collection or reuse.
